Helping dogs as they age
Cute mixed breed dog
Help your senior pooch thrive!
Is there anything more beautiful than a frosty-faced dog?! With advances in veterinary care, our pets are living longer. So how can we help them enjoy their senior years to the full? Here are 5 useful tips:
Consistent moderate exercise. Going for short walks every day will really benefit your older dog – go at their pace so that they can sniff and explore. This short, regular exercise is better for them than having one or two long walks a week.
Make your home senior-friendly. Consider adding non-slip rugs to tiled floors. Try to avoid them jumping off of furniture – portable ramps/steps can be useful.
Talk to your vet about supplements. Depending on your dog’s needs and medical history, fish oil, rosehip granules or turmeric paste could be beneficial. Always seek professional advice before introducing new supplements or medications. There are some great medications for older pets that can greatly improve their later years.
Carry on training them. All dogs, regardless of age, enjoy mental challenges. The old saying ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is very untrue. Your dog will enjoy spending time with you doing some training, even if it’s just a few minutes at a time.
Canine remedial massage. Senior pets really benefit from remedial massage. It can reduce pain and help them to remain as mobile as possible for as long as possible. Get in contact today with Helping Hounds Remedial Massage to find out more.
